Remarks by Her Excellency Dr. Nkosazana C. Dlamini Zuma,
Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Africa,
Chairperson of the Thirtieth Annual Ministerial Meeting
of the Group of 77, During the Presentation of the Appreciation Award
to Prof. Mohammed Hassan, Executive Director of TWAS

New York, 22 September 2006

"We are honouring today Prof. Mohammed Hassan in recognition of his outstanding leadership and valuable support and tireless efforts in favour of the G-77, particularly in regards to initiatives undertaken by the G-77 since the First South Summit in the field of South-South Cooperation in Science and Technology. As you are aware, TWAS has been very supportive not only to the preparatory process of the First South Summit when we addressed the theme of knowledge and technology but also in facilitating the effective implementation of its outcome, especially the establishment of the consortium on science and technology. TWAS under the able leadership of Professor Mohammed Hassan also provided all the scientific support and expertise in handling the selection process of the winner of the G-77 Award for Science, Technology and Innovation which was presented for the first time this year to Prof. Pedro Prieto, a physical scientist from Colombia. Furthermore, TWAS provided valuable support in the preparation of our meeting of Ministers of Science and Technology which led to the conversion of Third World Network of Scientific Organizations into the Consortium on Science, Technology and Innovation for the South (COSTIS). Indeed, Prof. Hassan has been very instrumental in this process and we are working very closely with him for the operationalization of all decisions adopted by our leaders in the Second South Summit pertaining to science and technology."
